CARBAGE- A SAMADHAN INITIAVE

 THE PROBLEM

In Delhi, as in most big cities in India, we throw garbage out of car windows, buses, thus contributing to the unhygienic and filthy environment. Dirty and garbage littered roads are a common sight in our country. We use our roads and highways as dumping grounds and it is common to see garbage piled up on the sides and we cannot deny that this is a health hazard. Usually children from the neighbouring slums and low income colonies can be seen wading through such piles of garbage and this is the vocation they grow into. It is a sight which haunts us for long and will be part of memories visitors will carry away with them.

WHY is it important and relevant?

So, making our roads and highways garbage free and lessen the risks of infection is a crucial problem which needs to be dealt with on a priority basis, particularly, in view of the fast approaching Commonwealth Games.

HOW will the solution be addressed?

SAMADHAN is an international award-winning NGO with 28 years of experience which has creditability and good will among various stakeholders. Although focus has been on intellectually disabled children impacted by poverty, we are conscious of the fact that the environmental condition, in which these children live, causes much ill health and infection and the inadequate civic amenities for garbage disposal aggravates this situation.

Poverty is a long battled issue. In spite of several measures taken by both government and service organizations, the fact of poverty remains. While it is unrealistic to root out poverty at one go, it is possible to minimize its impact by providing opportunities for gainful employment to as many people as possible living in poverty.

Our proposal for CARBAGE has the potential to provide income generation opportunities to these communities by making the bags designed.

WHAT IS CARBAGE?

CARBAGE is a unique low cost and easily manufactured product. It will consist of two bags one inside the other. The outer one is the container and is a simple bag made of recycled materials such as newspaper, jute, cloth or biodegradable plastic. The inner bag will be made of water proof material which will contain the garbage deposited in it, will be leak proof and able to take weight based on usage of the car by the consumer. For instance frequent long distance travelers may require larger containers and inside bags to carry extra load as also buses. CARBAGE will come in several sizes and could be placed on floors of vehicles or attached to the back of the front seat.

Expected results

  • A cleaner, less cluttered ,more healthy and hygienic environment
  • A facility for garbage disposal for all commuters and vehicles on our roads and highways as well as in trains
  • Livelihood opportunities for people in low socio economic communities.
  • Empowerment of low socio economic community women as well as adult disabled depending on their capacities by providing opportunities for income generation.
